The process

The process of coming up with the honours thesis, is actually rather rewarding. Amidst frustration and boredom of what or how to formulate those words and equations, when I see the thesis taking shape and the number of pages increasing, I actually feel a sense of achievement.

I once thought I can't even hit the minimum of 30 pages. Now it seems to me, that it may well be possible. I still need to read up on more literature though, as my analysis is just analysis now, not so much backed up by papers and research.

Continue, please. I keep telling myself that.

My big breakthrough?!

Look what I've received in my mail box! Email correspondence between my fyp supervisor and the prof who provided us with the dataset:

Dear Wan Ting

Have you got the final results of the analysis? If yes, can you send it to Dr Soong for possible inclusion in the presentation at Berlin next week?

I will be on leave from 16 - 25 February. So, if you would like me to read the drafts before final submission, please do so before then.

Regards
Bee Choo

AND

Hi Bee Choo,

Just wondering if there were any results from the analysis of the gemcitabine data that you and your student would like me to include (with acknowledgement) in my presentation in Berlin next week. I have to hand in slides by Friday.

Cheers,
Richie

Wow!! Imagine if my name and contribution might possibly be mentioned in a conference such as this. The thought of it is just exciting (and motivating)!!

Here comes the big BUT.......

I'm not ready with my complete written analysis, to be sent over for the profs to see!! Oh well, it's just not meant to be.

Better just work harder and get on with the thesis. Like now! :p

It's all worth it!

So, it was Saturday out with Dear. We were at Raffles City for a short while, and were amazed to see all the performances and exhibitions going on, displaying some arts stuff. We even saw the performance, I believe is called the 千手观音.

Our only picture for the day, as I stupidly just grabbed my camera when I was going out, forgetting to bring my extra battery to replace this one that was already low! See..I told you I'm not going to wear red, not like that fellow beside me. Haha..

Also, managed to catch this dance. I forgot what's the name of the tribe, but according to the host, it's one that is probably never heard of before in Singapore. Haha.. Somehow, the ladies look pretty much the same to me!

Okies, so we just hung around there for awhile, before we went off to have our dinner and leaving to meet Dear's friends at the National Stadium to catch the semi-final match between Singapore and Malaysia.

It was drizzling when we reached there at 6 plus. Certainly not very good weather for a game like that. But fortunately, as the crowd started filling up the stadium and by the time the match started, the rain's stopped.

The atmosphere was good, many rounds of Kallang wave and cheering for the home team. But as usual, there's the boo-ing of the Malaysian team and supporters. Should have seen how many security officers were put around the Malaysian supporters!

The match really went on for the longest possible time. For all that action, and possible goals that Singapore might have scored, I quote the guys as "6 dollars worth it lah! You think this is EPL meh?" Haha.. So I just took one pathetic picture of the players in action before the batt died. (It's blur and small though!)

Ole ole ole ole... Ole ole...

We left the stadium, and it started raining again! Dear's friend said those were showers of blessing. Bless who, may I ask? Singapore, for the next match against the strong Thai team? I wonder if I'll be watching that match too.

Anyway, went for supper at AMK cos Dear and I were famished from the long match (our butts ached!) and our early dinner. Finally, it was home sweet home. Totally zonked out after my bath!

Back to sch tmr!

Wazzup?!

I think time is beginning to pass faster, and that usually happens when you have a deadline to meet. Mine is on 21st Feb, that's just about 3 weeks away! I need to start writing my thesis, and perhaps learn to use Latex like the rest of them so I can convert it into a pdf file.

In the past week, I have been forcing myself to keep to the routine of reading the newspapers daily. Usually I just go to the Home and Life! sections, but I figured I need to know more about the rest of the region or the world, and even some finance when it comes to interviews or whatsoever in the future. I hope I can stick through with this routine for quite some time, and thereafter it would become a habit, instead of a forced action.

Oh yeah, after all that complaints about not knowing what kind of job I want to go for, I stepped into Popular Bookstore and just bought a copy of the Career Guide. Haha. I was wondering if I could actually find some indications inside, which I really hoped so, but nah. I think only at most 20 pages were relevant or of interest! Waste of my money, really. So, if anyone wants to have a look at the Career Guide, ask me!

The day I had my break and stayed at home, I went back onto YouTube and watched the movie Battle Royale. The whole idea of the game is sick-- a class of youngsters were sent to an island and classmates forced to kill each other for survival, and often putting the trust between friends to the test. It was kind of disturbing at first but that kind of feeling soon went away for me, as it's just a show!

Just today, I discovered the Meiji's BLACK CHOCOLATE tastes pretty good! Haha.. I don't really know if there's a difference between dark and black chocolate, neither do I know how good other black chocolate can get, but I would say, this one is satisfying, especially for that little price you pay. Craving satisfied!

Pretty much the end to one week of my boring life. It's finally the weekend again -- the army boy is available! Haha.. I'm going to watch soccer at the National Stadium with him and his friends -- Singapore vs Malaysia. I hope the weather's good, and of the cos the game too. May Singapore win!! But no, I'm not going to wear red to support the lions.

Alright, that's it.

Ten years

At 2am, I realised my calculator has shown its first signs of giving up on me. My trusty SHARP EL-546L calculator, which has been with me since I was in Secondary 1. You can no longer find this calculator anymore. Why didn't it just hang on for another semester? I don't know if I can survive this semester using the calculator in this state (two rows of pixels thingy spoilt) or can I familiarize myself with another calculator in such a short time?

I think I'm crazy, but I'm feeling a little sad cos of the calculator. It's got every bit of sentimental feeling to me, having been through all major exams with me, and I've got the batteries changed twice. I wonder if it's still possible to repair it; but I seriously think it's not going to be worth it. I can only blame myself, for I've dropped the calculator too many times before.

So much for new things come and old things go. Sometimes I wish that things don't have to change. No matter for the better or for worse.

No title

I can't think of one today.

So, I talked about good food in celebration of 2-3 last time. We ended up in Earle Swensen's at Vivocity. The food is somewhat the same as any other Swensen's but their servings are huge! Probably cos you pay more too. Went there with the intention of eating their apple crumble, but ended up eating chocolate fondue which wasn't so good. Had a lift home from WL's friend (someone I think I will meet just this once) and just before I got off the car, found out that he lives in the same block as Dear. Coincidences like that do occur yeah.

And then the week went by. Pretty much just school then heading for the honours room to waste my time away. Met XM for hair treatment on Thursday. Not a very pleasant experience, since the hairdressers were busy, and I had the lady boss blow drying my hair for me. Must be one of her "rare appearances", as she had my hair blown into my face, and her awkward unfamiliarity with the hairdryer. Said no to her using the flat iron on my hair, cos I'm just so scared she might burn my hair. My hair is straight enough with just blow drying, thanks.

Saturday was the highlight of my week. I'm beginning to feel like those girls after JC who only meet their boyfriends once a week, over the weekend when the guy books out from camp. Haha.. I'm a bit old for that now. Anyway, so we met and had dinner in Dian Xiao Er at Marina Square. The food was good, although too much for just the two of us. We just walked arnd a little and headed home. At least I was happy, because I haven't been going out for the past two weekends.

I believe I have the "best" timetable in the world! I had 4 modules initially, and just today, I dropped 2 of them. No point taking a module that I won't learn anything from nor one that has such a demanding workload (and I'm going to S/U it). So I'm back to just taking my core modules, yet I have a 4-day week. Isn't it fantastic!? And they are all lectures in the morning. No one loves school and the morning crowd more than me.

I want to get a part-time job. Build up my pathetic savings for the next few months to come. Especially those when I'm waiting to find/get a job. I'm really trying to think what kind of job I want to look for when I graduate. And I've come across the biggest problem-- I don't know! Is it going to be banking/finance, research (market, bio etc etc) or sth that is totally unrelated to what I'm studying? I wish I have someone to talk to, a senior or a mentor, or just someone who has been through such jobs.

Frankly, I think I'm not very career-minded afterall. Perhaps I should just get married and stay at home! But that is only if my husband has that financial capability to support me. I don't want to be a tai tai, if my friends are working and I have no one to spend my leisurely afternoons with, shopping or drinking high tea. Being me, I might just get bored of that kind of lifestyle easily too. And remember, I have a shopping crisis recently.

Hui was talking about a pair of heels she said "it was love at first sight". WL agreed, but when I looked at it, I didn't feel anything. Yeah, no. No interest in heels, in dresses or anything too flowery in fact. Nor retro for the moment. I need some confidence boost first perhaps.

Alright, too much crap for one night. Already looking forward to the next weekend.

Musings

"Statisticans are biased people, to varying extents."

That's the take home message I gathered from today's lecture and my nick on MSN for now. The keywords are "bias" and "variance". Ha ha. Year 4 life still sux! I think I must be out of my mind to take Financial Accounting. The language of business seem to be even harder to understand than those big words of gamma, beta, normal distribution and what not.

The weekend just came and went, and just like that it's over. I was like DAMN! I have been stuck at home for the past two weekends. I was screaming from inside to get out, but somehow I just didn't manage to go out. Especially when the boyfriend was sick, and unable to spend much time with me.

Just to make some recommended reads, if you have some spare time online.
(1) Couple at colinandjo.blogspot
(2) Parenthood at HunnyBunz

These are blogs I chanced upon or found out through magazines and articles. Reading the stories of such a sweet couple, as well as the loving and doting parents of their special children, I feel like the world is a beautiful place to live in. Simply forget the unforgiving and misdeeds, for a moment.

Looking to have a good dinner tmr while I celebrate the very first 23rd birthday among my friends. It won't be long before it's mine. I'm getting old, oh my!!

Major sigh

Why is it that time seems to pass so quickly sometimes, and yet at some other times, it just seem to creep by really slowly?

This first week of school has been terribly slow to get by. Even though it's only the first week, when you see the few of us in the honours room, it seems as though we've been through half the semester!

Almost everything revolves around the final year thesis, and project in Year 4. That sux!

Finally it's the weekend, and I get time off from school and fyp. After a week, I finally get to see my boyfriend who has to be back in the army for 3 months. Yet, I know the weekend is going to pass so quickly, our time together on Saturday is going to be so limited.

SIGH...

Stars and You (and me)

Okies, random surfing in school now. Only had a lecture at 8am, and now I'm free. Check out these horoscope stuff by astrology.com. Some are pretty accurate, in my opinion. Those which I think apply to me are in blue.

1. Romantic Compatibility (between Pisces and Scorpio)

When Scorpio and Pisces make a love match, theirs is a splendid union of much respect and understanding. These mates share the same Element -- Water -- and thus have keen insight into one another's minds and hearts. Scorpio is very profound and covert, often caught up in their own secret plans, while Pisces is idealistic and looks for the nuances of a situation. However, Pisces also has a tendency to withdraw into their own mind, and can forgive Scorpio for being mysterious or withdrawn at times.

Both Signs are intuitive and in touch with the subtleties of human interaction. Scorpio can help Pisces fulfill dreams and ambitions -- to turn ideas into reality. The Scorpion will provide a steadfast foundation for the relationship to revolve around, and the more ephemeral and intuitive Fish will become entangled in Scorpio's web. In return, Pisces offers gentleness, kindness, and sympathy, which Scorpio admires and appreciates. (I would like to think so...) Scorpio is interested in certain material comforts and intense emotional dramas, and at times cannot understand the simplistic, charitable attitude of Pisces. Their long-term aspirations can be completely unalike. (I think we're pretty different in terms of priorities.) Once they can understand and overcome this difference, theirs will be a very rewarding relationship. (Still working on it.)

Mars and Pluto rule Scorpio, and Jupiter and Neptune rule Pisces. Mars is the ancient God of War, and Scorpio individuals are living proof of this aggressive, courageous, daring and sometimes-belligerent influence. When Pluto combines with Mars, Pluto comes to symbolize new beginnings. Scorpio can take it, but they can also most certainly give it. Jupiter's rule of Pisces represents philosophy, expansion and excesses. The Neptunian influence gives Pisces a dreamy aura and a love for popular culture and media. Pisces dreamy, ethereal energy softens their Scorpio love's rough edges. The composite power of these four planets creates a balanced relationship, one of drama and emotional intrigue; this is a true celestial bond. However, a Scorpio mate must let their beloved Fish swim about a bit; a sensitive Pisces will suffocate under too many demands.

Scorpio and Pisces are both Water Signs. They're so compatible because Water is a tangible, physical entity, and both Signs appreciate and use this characteristic to their advantage. The destiny of a Pisces is to bring people together, and when this energy meets Scorpio's intensity and tenacity, there is no stronger bond. Also, Scorpio has an absolutist view of life; everything is either golden or tarnished. A patient Pisces opens the world up to their Scorpio mate, allowing them to see the bigger picture rather than just all that minute detail. Scorpio could grow weary of Pisces's unsteadiness, and Pisces may see Scorpio as self-absorbed and insensitive to their emotional needs. Still, it's not beyond these partners to seek out and find a compromise. (Once again, still working on it. It's all about compromising I guess.)

Scorpio is a Fixed Sign, and Pisces is a Mutable Sign. Scorpio puts their energy into one thing at a time, but Pisces skips around to wherever their feelings take them. Pisces, as a Mutable Water Sign, then, molds easily into their Scorpio lover's life and pastimes. (Yeah, like soccer?) In turn, Scorpio needs to give Pisces the freedom to enjoy personal interests. A Pisces can show a Scorpio that flexibility can be fun and exciting, that compromise can be reached without a big fight or struggle. The energies of a Scorpio and a Pisces feed off of one another's energy well, making for a powerful and emotionally satisfying union.

What's the best thing about a Scorpio-Pisces love match? Their similarly intense emotional natures, their shared sensitivity to the undercurrents of life, to the more ethereal magic of love. This is a relationship of harmony and fulfillment. Scorpio and Pisces both live empathetically and seek true, profound commitments, and this connection will keep the ties strong and their love enduring. (I hope so.)

3. The Astrological Chocolate Guide to Love

Wrapped in a heart-shaped box with a big bow -- or piece by piece savoring every magnificent morsel? Here's the Astrological insight into the way each Sun Sign craves and consumes chocolate.

Aries
eats all of the chocolates in one sitting.

Taurus
tends to buy two boxes and leave only the orange ones for you.

Cancer
draws it out to make even the smallest box last for a month.

Sagittarius
only orders foreign chocolates.

Capricorn
seeks perfection in picking truffles of the best variety.

Aquarius
skips chocolates altogether -- they prefer a box of carob and raisin health bars.

Pisces
tends to share them all and forget to leave one for themselves.
(Hmm, I keep chocolate for myself too! Especially in times of craving. *guilty*)

Just for reading pleasure. Ha ha :)

I've decided...

To be a nerd for this last semester. Ha ha.

Not a nerd who studies and mugs in the library, but just by wearing my spectacles to school a little more often.

Actually it's cos I'm lazy to put on contact lens. Those lens actually put a strain on your eyes; I need to let my eyes rest, I see some fine lines already.

Tuesday, January 09, 2007

Oh nO!

I think I have some crisis at hand.

Firstly, I can't wake up in the freaking morning!!! Even today, I overslept for my lecture at 10am. Two reasons: one, I'm simply VERY tired or two, I'm really too used to sleeping in and waking up late for almost the entire month of December. I think I am a real slacker! No surprise.

Year 4 life is kinda lonely. (Just when I typed this, XM signed into MSN with the nick "Lone Ranger" -- I think we share some telepathy! Ha ha.) This time round, I didn't even plan to take modules with anyone. Besides the core modules which Hui might or might not be taking, I just take any other rubbish modules I feel like. (I used to take them with WL, if not I'll try to get Dear to take it with me.) Can't really explain what I feel, but solitude is quite close.

Secondly, I always have an academic problem. I look back and think I really put in little effort for last semester's exams, which explains the horrible results. Now I have this unhealthy mindset of just getting past this semester, since I figured out that as long as I pass (I mean at least B- ) all my modules and honours project, I'm going to be very safe and secure with my 2nd lower. With this kind of mindset, I doubt I can find the motivation for my studies this semester. Sigh...

Thirdly, I have a girly issue with shopping. Because I was kinda free after going to school today, I dropped by Far East to have a look. I didn't even have much urge for shopping!! How is that happening? Is it the place, or me?! Ha ha. In fact my shopping habits are becoming more and more like a guy. I want to get a sling bag, and I go out to shop for my sling bag, I look at almost nothing else other than bags. This is not good.

Besides, the retro fashion is here, I think. So peering into those shops, many of them are selling tops with big bold prints -- not quite my type. I don't know what attracts me anymore. No impulse to get anything. Perhaps it's good afterall, on my pocket.

BUT I need to do hair treatment!! The quality of my hair is really bad now, and I can't stand the sight of those strands of hair with fuzzy ends.

I'm missing my holidays already...

It came.

And it's gone. 8th Jan -- without much of a hitch. *phew*

First presentation is over, but there's no break. I have to continue to work on the report since the submission is just two weeks from today. Spent the last nights preparing for the presentation, and I'm really exhausted with a headache now.

What other way to start the first day of school of my last semester?!

Say, by skipping all the lectures today? Ha ha. I was supposed to have 3 lectures today, and yet I didn't go for any. There was no way I could drag myself out of bed for the 8am and 10am lectures. I have half a mind to drop the lecture at 2pm, so I didn't go; my mind was all on the presentation afterwards anyway.

Even though I'm already a Year 4 student, I still go to lectures half expecting the first lecture to be a total waste of time. Like spending 30 minutes going through information that can be found on IVLE, then class is dismissed. But obviously, that's not the case. Lessons start on week 1, day 1, lecture 1. Ha ha. I only have 2 more "first lecture" for modules in this last semester. I think I better treasure them.

Which is tomorrow....

It's our 1234th day together!!
Each day spent with you is a gift

And appreciative we've made it thus far.
Despite all the quarrels that we had,
I am glad you still held on to my hand
Not letting me go.
Many more days ahead of us both...
I love you.

Meaning of mobile

Is the lifestyle of us people getting so dependent on gadgets? Seriously, I don't understand the need for the development of such things as PS*P. Is there a need for every moment on the move to be filled with entertainment such as games? What's the use if you are a student who can't even bring that damn thing to school! Might as well just come home to play on the real thing. It is a luxury I deem extremely unnecessary to have! Sigh.

Maybe I'm just being stubborn, refusing to move with the times. Even for mobile phones, I don't fancy all the video calls, email, mobile messenger and blogging kind of features. The notion of being connected to the world all the time just doesn't entice me. As long as the phone looks pleasant, user-friendly with features like sms, and call, or at most GPRS is enough for me. The camera has become a real bonus, though.

I prefer times to myself on the bus for journeys from place to place. Why keep your eyes glued on that tiny screen, and miss out on what's happening around you? I like to sometimes observe people on the bus, or on the roads outside or even just take note of the order the traffic lights change their colours. I think it's just me.

Anyway, did you know 6th Jan was Cuddle-Up Day? Haha.. I never knew of such a thing until I saw an email to send ecards for this special day. Interesting isn't it? But well, no cuddles for Saturday as I spent the entire night till 9am this morning on my powerpoint slides, so that I can send them to my tutors. Feeling so nervous for the presentation tmr!! Maybe I might forget what I was supposed to say, maybe I might just start answering questions and contradict myself, maybe I won't even know how to answer the questions or maybe I might just trip and fall in that unfamiliar attire.

Please let 8th Jan come and go without a hitch! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE...

Another late night tonight, most probably.

Here we are...

At the crossroads once again.

One of my friends, who has worked for slightly more than half a year, is now thinking of taking up Masters!! Maybe that's how your job can propel you to consider options that have never crossed your mind before. Masters don't come cheap though, and she's in a dilemma as to what to do. I can't offer her help, monetary or much in words, because it's difficult.

Every now and then, we might just find ourselves at the crossroads, not knowing which path to take or which decision to make. Because we fear that what we eventually arrive at at the end of the road, is not exactly what we imagined to be. I dislike times like that.

Fireworks

I just chanced upon a movie clip of the Fireworks display at the New Year countdown party at the Esplanade. I kinda regretted not going down to watch. I think the fireworks went on for abt 10 minutes or so? Not only were there the usual showers, there was more of the synchronization stuff this time. I thought they looked sooo pretty on the video.

The last time I watched fireworks was in SeaWorld, on Independence Day. There was some miscommunication between XM and I, so I ended up watching it myself. Somehow, it made me a little upset and ending up missing him, because the last (last) time I watched the fireworks display was for National Day celebrations.

I missed the nation's celebrations in 2006. Neither have I been to any of those special fireworks display by different countries. I really look forward to the next one (I don't know when!)... Honestly, the fireworks are better in Singapore than in SeaWorld.

Somehow, the feeling of watching fireworks in the sky is.................. Magical.

And romantic.

I sent out an email to my tutors to arrange a meet-up tmr (morning). It's about time I see them again, as my first presentation is just 4 days away. I'm still figuring out what I have to show them actually, since I haven't made much progress since the last time I met them, which was like 3 weeks ago!

It's a feeling of anticipation and fear for the presentation. I anticipate it, since it has to come before it can be over. But I surely fear for it, since this is my first major presentation in my entire academic pursuit in NUS. I have stage fright, and I'm shy of speaking up in front of a group of people; even more intimidated when it comes to the Q&A session. Bless me, please.

Mugging for FYP for the remaining days. I'm undecided for the modules to take too. Should I take extra modules?

If given a wish for the new year, what would you ask for?

Say Hello to...

To the year 2007!! And goodbye to the year 2006..

The year 2006 marked some great time in my life, and the highlight has to be the trip to Orlando, Florida for the Work and Travel programme. Although I had some hesitations at the beginning, but the trip turned out to be a learning experience -- being independent and also opened the doors to travelling, which I will continue again.

In this year, many of my friends graduated. While they have had their first taste of working life, earning money before me, I'm still struggling with my final year, now left with the last semester. It may mean less time to meet up, but when we do, like over the weekends, and special occasions, it does feel good to catch up, be it over dinner or some shopping.

Frankly, I have no new year resolutions for 2007. I am looking forward to graduation (for now because I can't stand final year) and yet I haven't quite figured out what is my dream job. In which field, or position do I see myself going into, and even spending probably the next 3 years in that corporation. I hope I can get this sorted out soon.

Just today, some family members gathered at the columbarium, to pay visit to my grandfather. Some of them got emotional when my Aunt led to sing His song and said a prayer. It is consoling that he now rest in peace, alongside one of his most doted sons. We had lunch together afterwards, and the rest of the day was spent with my family.

I hope for the best for everybody in 2007, especially to be happy and healthy with loved ones by your side. Though it sounds cliched, but that's really what matters the most. And, the best place to be, is still at HOME.

With this, I shall end off my 257th post of this blog, marking two whole years of my thoughts, ramblings, complaints etc etc etc..

Once again...
