:)

I just thought of sharing amusing stuff my (assistant) professor wrote for me. When I saw it, I just had to laugh, and perhaps that was how my A for Honours Project came about - a deluded sense of difficulty.

Here goes...

In her honor thesis, she was required to perform a very complicated statistical
methodology (involving sophisticated programming and time-consuming
computation). Such a task would even be challenging for a second-year PhD
student
. (...cont'd)

To him, I replied:

Thanks for the referral letter you have written for me. However, I would
just like to clarify that the level of difficulty of my honours thesis is
not as high as you perceived, and I really dare not claim credit to that.
Although I have done the analysis on my part, but in terms of the programming,
most of them are ready-to-use functions in R.

I think I am mastering the art of email - it will do me well in the future. *Shoots arrow(s)*

On the other hand, while packing my stuff, I realised how much electronic mail has actually changed our lives. I used to post cards by snail mail, or write notes/postcards for my friends. I uncovered many sent to me, and reading them makes me smile - because of things that we used to write and of the things that used to bother us. Haha..

Over the years, the number of cards decreases. Maybe it's not just cos we're going electronic, but also because of the fact that I'm 'losing' my friends. We just went on to live our separate lives, or found other friends/relationships along the way.

In some sense, I'm still a little girl, who likes to check the mailbox, hopefully to be surprised with mail addressed to me. There's still that little excitement in finding out who sent me cards/letters and what's written in the card/letter. It's definitely a different feeling reading off the computer screen, even if it's an e-card I'm getting.

Anyway, it's the weekend! Somehow, this week has passed by faster than the rest, and I'm not complaining. It's only on Saturday I get to see the boyfriend now, so surely it's worth looking forward to!

In the process...

Of preparing my application. It's been taking some time, especially when I procrastinated about the referral letters. Waiting for one more return. Even at this point in time, I am still unwilling to commit to the position (for some reason). But even flipping the Recruit section didn't turn up with anything interesting. The closest was that in JobStreet; but that's asking for a different degree. Should I even think of trying for it?

Just me?

Sometimes, in my own little space, I just wonder. Wonder how is it that people around me seem to have changed or moved on in every and any little way, while I seem to have stagnated myself. I feel as though nothing has changed about myself, even after 4 years in the University, my social circle has hardly expanded.

This is just what I think. Perhaps when others see me, they would think I have changed in some way or another.

Probably the only thing that matters, is whether the change is for better or for worse.

Treasure chest

Packing my drawers came up with lots of stuff. Some so old (and classic) they make me laugh. Remember there was once a time, when you put 10 or 20 cents into a machine, turn the knob and roll out some cards? Depending on your luck, you either get pictures of 'hot and popular' artistes or some you never even heard of.

Here are some I found! TCS it was called then..

Michelle Chia

Look at how much they have changed. For the better, of cos!

Thomas Ong and Ix Shen.

Besides the local artistes, there were the ones from Hong Kong too! Haha..

Who can forget the dimples, Grasshoppers, Jacky Cheung and Andy Lau!!

And for the guys, the dream lover Zhou Hui Min.

Many more, but all of them just goes into the trash now. And did I mention I had a few 'flash' ones too. Those were deemed the more precious ones! Like this..

Had a good laugh when I saw this. I never knew I once wore specs that were so 'harry-porter'. They definitely looked like they have been through hell with me! Hah..

Still in the midst of packing. Who knows what else I can come up with...

B.O.R.E.D

I am so bored I start thinking of activities to do. All of a sudden, I feel like taking up dance classes. (This is very odd because I'm totally not a 'dance' person especially when I'm so 'stiff'.) So what kind of dance, I don't know! I'm also contemplating yoga classes, since the beginning of time.

Other than classes, I want to cable-ski, wakeboard, go on more getaways (anywhere - JB or even Sentosa which I haven't really been around). I want to cycle and bbq at ECP, which I have hardly stepped foot into after leaving VJ.

What else do I want to do? Shop?!

One most important factor holding me back, is that I have no money!
Plus, I'm shy of the sun, now I need my sunscreen when I go out! Argh...

I need to do something, other than packing my room for now. But I speculate that could take quite awhile if I really want to clear (and clean) up all the stuff. I suspect I have a really serious issue with hoarding stuff, thinking this or that shld be kept for so and so reason. The result: the junk in my room simply just increases with time.

Argh...

With Certainty,

I thought of 5 things which I have done or experienced that I won't ever regret in my life.

1. My secondary education and life in Cedar.
2. Band as my CCA for 6 years.
3. Choosing Statistics as my major.
4. The relationship with the boyfriend.
5. Work and Travel USA.

I hope in time to come, I have more things to add to list of no-regrets rather than regrets.

Random.

Sawadeeka

However you spell it.

I LOVE Thai food. The green curry, the fresh-chilli kangkong, the tom yum soup, the paad thai, the sweet and sour fish blah blah blah. Oh, and the Thai sweet chilli sauce. Anytime, I'm in for a Thai meal. Like today, I had a very yummy and filling meal at LemonGrass. If my husband is Thai or can whip up some really good Thai dishes, I'd be so happy!

Anyway, I think I am really Asian at heart. When I'm overseas (or sometimes even when I'm at home), I would miss having my white rice. And even more frequently, I'd miss a bowl of hot soup, especially some of those that my mum cooks.

Asian food is definitely still my favourite; can't stay in a Western country for long.

Fortune

It comes not in the form of wealth, but in having a family and my doting parents. Even having a boyfriend can't beat that, especially when he's the reason of my unhappiness.

Escapade No. 1

Following our Pulau Ubin getaway, Dear and I went to Batam for a short 2 days getaway. Frankly, Batam was a disappointment from what I remembered years ago. I thought there would be water sports to play, bungey jumping and lots more activities. Turned out that I was either at a wrong part of Batam, or the place just changed so much.

Hotel room and the facilities. Really big room. And nice view from the balcony.

Very tasty pizza. Dear can't stop having it! He probably ate like three quarter of it. And not to mention we ordered another one before we left on the last day.

Also had A&W at Nagoya. It's like a must-have, when I saw it. But it turned out to be just okay. They had no root beer float for the day though :|

Dear preparing for his 10mins foot reflexology. I want too! But no chance.. next time perhaps. Home bound at the ferry terminal.

The most enjoyable thing about the getaway is that we get to spend time with just each other. No distractions like his work. It's going to be a long wait before time like that comes around. In fact, I hope the next one would be a vacation, instead of just a short getaway.
The promise of 2008.

Power Quotient Report

Your POWER QUOTIENT is:

And your POWER STYLE is:

Your Power Quotient (PQ) measures the extent to which you understand and use your Power Style to get what you want in life. Your job, your relationships, your status — they're not just handed to you. Whether you recognize it or not, your Power Style affects how you approach people, accomplish your goals, and handle just about every situation.

Your PQ indicates that you're already using 76% of your innate people-power skills. But you can still improve by 24%. Once you understand more about your Power Style, there's nothing stopping you from becoming a true force of change in your world.

Your Power Style

Your power lies in your ability to use the various Power Styles called for in different situations. You have been known to be both a lone wolf and a team player depending on either the circumstance, or your mood at the time.

You are flexible and are not married to any one way of exerting influence. You understand when you need to take action and when you need to sit back and let nature take its course.

Sometimes you may feel the most effective method of getting what you want from people is by meeting them at their own level, taking their mindset into account and then working your influence. At other times, you believe that a straightforward — maybe even confrontational — tactic is necessary. To you, neither one is more effective — it's all a matter of using different strategies to exert your power in the world.

Your Power Profile

This graph breaks down the five dimensions that make up your Power Quotient. Each one plays a role in determining both your overall PQ score and Power Style. Understanding and strengthening these five dimensions is the key to raising your PQ.

Blame
Credit
Control
Tact
Directness
1 5 10

The first three dimensions — blame, credit, and control — are based on the following questions: When things are going well, to what extent do you take credit for success? To what degree do you blame others for the negative things that happen? Do you believe that you, or external forces, have control over events in your life?

The last two dimensions — tact and directness — refer to the relative number and kinds of strategies you have, and the frequency with which you utilize them. Are you more inclined to confront someone when you have a problem or are you going to find another way to get your point across?

Blame
Bad things happen to everyone, but not everyone interprets them in the same way. Some people consider all of their problems self-made, while others see outside forces — bad luck, bad karma, bad weather — acting against them.

The "Blame" graph looks at where you commonly assign responsibility for "negative" events in your life. Your score determines to what extent you think external influences have created unhappiness in your past and present. Your score is also a reflection of how you view negativity and failure in general.

Your Blame Score
Out of 10, your tendency to put blame on external forces is a 7:

Blame
1 5 10

What does this mean?
Your score indicates that you have a very balanced view on how you view negative events in your life. Though failures and disappointments happen to everyone, you usually take an honest inventory when something bad occurs. Sometimes you're inclined to blame everything but yourself for your problems and other times you understand you've played a strong role in how things have turned out. For you, the root of unfortunate events is unique to each situation.

Credit
While success is what everyone strives for, actually attaining it affects people differently. Some credit their successes to a higher power, while others regard their achievements simply as the product of hard work.

The "Credit" graph measures to what extent you think outside influences have created whatever happiness and success you currently possess. Your score is also a reflection of how you view achievement in general.

Your Credit Score
Out of 10, your tendency to attribute successes to external influences is a 6:

Credit
1 5 10

What does this mean?
Your score indicates that you have a balanced view when it comes to how you view the positive events in your life. Successes come and go, and you understand that your role in manifesting them is varied. You're fully aware of the fact that some good things need to be worked for, whereas others may come easily. More importantly, you are just as likely to think yourself responsible for a windfall as any outside influence.

Control
Navigating life requires us to constantly interpret our surroundings. We instinctually believe some things to be outside of our control, or driven by our environment, while others we see as directly under our influence.

The "Control" graph measures to what degree you view chance or fate as having played a role in your life thus far. Your score also sets the tone for how you approach life, and how much influence you believe you have on others.

Your Control Score
Out of 10, your tendency to believe that you are in control of life events is a 4:

Control
1 5 10

What does this mean?
Your score indicates that you have a very balanced view regarding the role of control in your life. There are times when you feel as though your choices and outcomes have been externally controlled, the result of chance or fate. However, there are also times when you understand you have arrived at your current place primarily through your own efforts. On the whole, you seem to have found a balance between these two extremes. This implies that you take a calculated approach rather than let your personal biases rule your judgments. You see clearly the limitations of your own actions.

Take Action
Recognizing that your life is fundamentally under your own control is an important step towards increasing your PQ. While this is something you may already understand intellectually, your score indicates that perhaps it's not a concept you've fully adapted yet.

Try to focus on those areas of your life, which are, to some degree, under your control. Think about the far-reaching effects that could arise from applying your influence in any one of these areas. This may include children, relationships, work, etc. Your sphere of influence is largely what you make of it. Keep this in mind, and you will shift the role chance seems to play in your life.

Shifting the Role of Control in your Life

Construct a list of the aspects of your life that you have direct control over (your performance at work, the way you treat your significant other, etc.).

Construct a list of the aspects of your life that you have an indirect influence over (the development of your children, the choices of your friends, etc.).

Construct a list of the aspects of your life that you have a slight or occasional influence over (political functions, social movements, etc.).

Track and recognize the extent of your reach in life, and resolve to use your power to better everything within your sphere of influence.

Tact
The "Tact" graph measures how many subtle power strategies you have available and how often you use them. Subtle strategies can define office politics and intimate relationships. Understated hints, telling body language and quiet but firm communication are all examples of subtle power strategies. At one end of the spectrum, subtle strategies can take the form of passive-aggressiveness and emotional manipulation and at the other end, they can be skilled diplomacy and heightened empathy. The more common ones, of course, fall somewhere in between.

Your "Tact" score determines the relative number of subtle power strategies your have at you disposal.

Your Tact Score
You are using 6 out of 10 subtle power strategies:

Tact
1 5 10

What does this mean?
You have some subtle strategies that you use on occasion. You understand how to how to be subtle with a recognizable level of skill, but you have other strategies that you may employ with greater frequency. In situations where others might find being subtle the preferable approach, you are just as likely to make use of a direct strategy.

Directness
The "Directness" graph measures how many direct power strategies you have at your disposal. In their most positive form, direct strategies are assertive and straightforward. Everyday examples include a firm handshake, an honest compliment and simply asking for what you want. Essentially, they are a form of give and take. At one end of the spectrum, direct strategies can take the form of extreme taking — theft and violence — and at the other end they can be extremely giving — altruism and charity. The more common ones, of course, fall somewhere in between.

Your "Directness" score determines the relative number of direct power strategies you have at your disposal.

Your Directness Score
You are using 6 out of 10 direct power strategies:

Directness
1 5 10

What does this mean?
This implies that you have some direct strategies that you use whenever they seem necessary. You know how to how to be straightforward with a recognizable level of skill, but you are probably just as likely to use more subtle methods of dealing with situations than you are overt ones.
